Sometimes termed "sharp" sands, these are usually coarser than sands used for mortar coarse aggregates, gravel/pebbles, broken bricks, size 5 to 25 mm very coarse aggregates, broken stones or bricks, size 25 to 60 mm. There are two to three different grades of aggregates*, depending on the type of concrete required: fine aggregates, sand and rock screenings, size 0.2 to 5 mm. ![]() ![]() ![]() The most important factors in making strong concrete are therefore: use of properly graded aggregates* with the right size and the right shape addition of the right amount of water avoidance of very fine particles as these will fill the small pores which should be filled with cement.
